Ask a family what kind of technology they want in their mother’s home, and the conversation often begins with what it can see. Ask the mother what she wants, and the answer is usually simple: nothing that watches her.

For years, home care has treated those priorities as a trade-off: give the care team and the family greater visibility, or protect the client’s privacy.

Passive sensing changes the question.

A person’s day has a shape: when they get up, how they move through their home, whether they prepare meals, and how settled their nights are. You do not need to watch someone to understand how they are doing. You need to know what normal looks like for that person, and to recognize when it begins to change.

That is what it means to read the room without watching it.

What Is Passive Sensing in Home Care?

Passive sensing uses technology to detect motion and activity patterns in a home without cameras, microphones, or anything the person must wear, charge, press, or remember to use.

It operates quietly in the background, learns the household’s normal rhythms over time, and identifies changes from that baseline. In home care, it can give agencies and families visibility into a client’s day during the many hours when no caregiver is present.

The word passive is central to the definition.

Active approaches to between-visit awareness require someone to take action: a client must answer a check-in call, a family member must report what they noticed, or a caregiver must document an observation.

Passive sensing does not depend on anyone remembering to do something. Awareness accumulates automatically, making it especially valuable for clients who may be unable or unlikely to self-report.

The need begins with where people want to grow older. According to AARP’s 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey, 75 per cent of adults aged 50 and older want to remain in their homes as they age.

How Passive Sensing Detects Changes in Routine for Older Adults at Home

At its core, passive sensing works in three stages: learn the shape of the day, follow the shape of the day, and surface meaningful changes.

1. Learn the baseline

During its first weeks in a home, the system develops a picture of the client’s ordinary routine.

When does the first movement of the day usually occur? How much of the home does the client typically use? How active are their afternoons? How quiet or unsettled are their nights?

The baseline is personal by design. One client’s unusually restless night may be another client’s normal pattern. The technology must understand the difference before a change becomes meaningful.

2.  Follow patterns, not isolated moments

Passive sensing does not draw conclusions from a single event. Instead, it follows the rhythm of the day and compares current activity with the client’s own history.

One slow morning is simply a data point. The more important question is whether mornings are becoming progressively slower or starting consistently later.

3. Surface persistent changes

When a client’s routine stops matching their established baseline and the difference persists across multiple days, the change can be surfaced to the care team as a pattern worth reviewing.

The types of changes that become visible are often the same ones care coordinators already know may matter:

Overnight movement: More trips out of bed, longer periods of activity during the night, later bedtimes, or increasingly fragmented sleep.

Morning start time: The first activity of the day begins later, or a routine that previously took one hour gradually stretches to three.

Range of movement: The client uses fewer rooms or spends more of the day in one location.

Kitchen activity: Activity around usual mealtimes decreases, which may be an early indication that meals are being skipped.

No single observation necessarily indicates a problem. The value lies in persistence: the same change repeating across several days or weeks in a client whose baseline shows that it is new.

Why Early Detection Matters for Care Coordinators

Care planning often operates on a relatively slow cycle. Many agencies reassess care plans every 60 days, but a client’s condition or capabilities can change significantly within that period.

Between formal reassessments, the plan describes the person who was evaluated weeks earlier. The coordinator’s judgment must fill the gap, and that judgment is only as strong as the information available.

Much of that information currently arrives late and second-hand.

A caregiver mentions that the client seemed tired during several visits. A daughter calls because something felt unusual over the weekend. Each report may be valid, but it often reaches the coordinator days or weeks after the underlying change began.

Routine data can move the starting line forward.

A coordinator who sees a client’s nights becoming increasingly fragmented in the first week has options that may no longer be available once the situation becomes a crisis. The coordinator can brief the caregiver on what to observe, speak with the family about additional support while it remains a considered choice, or initiate a reassessment based on the client’s actual trajectory rather than the calendar.

Care coordinators do not need technology to make decisions for them. They need relevant signals to arrive early enough to support their judgment.

What Passive Sensing Does Not Do

Passive sensing earns trust partly through what it is deliberately designed not to do. These limits are features, not shortcomings.

It does not watch or record

There are no cameras, microphones, images, or audio recordings. The system detects motion and activity patterns, not what someone looks like or what they are saying.

It does not identify people

The system can detect that movement occurred, where it occurred, and when. It does not determine who moved.

It does not diagnose or predict medical conditions

Passive sensing is not a substitute for medical assessment. It surfaces changes in routine; care professionals and families determine what those changes mean and whether any action is appropriate.

It does not provide emergency response

Passive sensing is not a help button, fall alarm, or emergency dispatch service. Pattern awareness and emergency response serve different purposes, and a home can benefit from both.

It does not replace human care

The visit remains where care happens. Passive sensing can improve what the care team knows before the visit, but it does not replace the caregiver’s presence, observation, or judgment.

These boundaries align closely with what many older adults say they will accept. In a scoping review examining older adults’ privacy perceptions of in-home technology, cameras and visual data drew privacy concerns in 44 per cent of the studies reviewed, while activity sensors were consistently viewed as more acceptable.

The rooms where change may first appear, particularly bedrooms and bathrooms, are also the rooms where cameras are least welcome.

The deeper change is the order in which events unfold.
